Accidental Entrepreneurship
How we stumbled into this calling and created our dream community…
Book Dragon Ink is now, isn’t really what we set out to create when our imaginations lit the first spark of the idea that became what it is now. But we love what it, and we, have become.
An introduction to the “Birds and the Bees” of entrepreneurship:
One day, long, long ago, in the middle of winter, in different offices, in different states, two writers came together online to create something new… something magical… something just for themselves….
We didn’t begin our journey with elaborate market research or detailed business plans. Book Dragon Ink simply began with three writers making our own writing processes and communities better for ourselves.
Zinzi Bree hosted a frequent “write-ins” on Zoom that brought us together. Sage and I (Katherine) were welcomed, and inspired, to take the experience further.
During our first venture into a DIY retreat just for ourselves and our personal writing projects, Sage and I were left looking at each other, asking “that’s it?” The generic, impersonal approach to a writing retreat left us craving a cozy, creative, and supportive experience engineered to help us get a lot of writing on the page.
In the end, we spent little time writing that day and a LOT of time brainstorming our next “retreat.” We did what writers do—we began to write, and bring our dream into reality. The more we dreamed, the more we wanted to host this for fellow writers who shared our hunger for a sacred time to write.
Businesses are not simply “found”—they are “forged”… and some sparks have a disturbing habit of becoming a full-blown fire.
The moment we decided to charge even a minuscule fee and open our event doors to others, our standards shifted entirely—we knew we needed to deliver something extraordinary. So, we approached Zinzi Bree and asked her to partner with us. We couldn’t have predicted that her response would be, essentially, “yes, but can we also start a podcast?”
Fires have a way of spreading.
Book Dragon Ink and Book Dragon Banter were born within only a few months (but believe us, it felt like forever and a day).
Our Ink Retreats are sacred, creative, and accessible sanctuaries for writers to come and discover they’re not alone, to prioritize their craft, to break through creative barriers blocking their flow, and to find support to help them transport their writing to new levels.
Not only do we solve our original problem, bringing our ideal retreat to life for ourselves, but we are able to host the experience for our fellow writers. We're building the cozy dragon's lair we all wished existed: a place where people aren't just passing through, but they’re settling into their new favorite chair to stay a while and write.
Now we are fanning the flames of our original idea.
Our mission is to foster transformative writing processes for writers who have been waiting to give themselves permission to call themselves writers and take time away from their busy schedules to make their creative dreams reality.
Books aren’t just born in this dragon’s lair—they’re fleshed out, revised, and even completed here.
Join us at one of our upcoming events to see if our processes and community are right for you.
May inspiration be ever in your corner and motivation on your side,
